Old San Juan, PR

Puerto Rico is a place that surprised me. This wasn’t my first time there, but this time we got a chance to get off the beaten path a little more and experience the local bars, music and dancing. Did I forget food? I would fly back here twice a year just to have the Mofongo, a plantain based dish that I could never make at home and do it justice. The culture is so incredibly rich and especially in Old San Juan, there are many things to discover. Without even the need of a passport, this is a treasure island of history, culture and fun that you have to experience at least once.

Upon landing, luckily we got a really nice day. We stayed at the El Convento Hotel, which used to be a convent if you couldn’t tell by the name. With rich architecture and a deeply historical past ( so deep they give you a pamphlet about the history of the hotel when you get there!) it was a wonderfully located place to explore all Old San Juan has to offer.  Not just that, the hotel is gorgeous! Boasting plenty of art and tiled marble floors, I felt like this was not only our hotel but a small museum. The staff was extremely accommodating and the rooms updated with a boutique flair.

The colorful buildings really show off the heart of Old San Juan. Everywhere you go feels like you stepped back in time.

Make sure to wear thick enough soles if you plan to walk around for a while. Cobblestone is extremely unforgiving to your feet.
